Gulfstream V Breaks High Speed Record On New York To Los Angeles Flight
Farnborough, U.K., July 24, 2000 -- Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), today announced that the Gulfstream V, the world's first ultra-long-range business jet, set another world speed record on a flight from New York to Los Angeles - breaking the previous record held by the Citation X.
On Monday, July 3, 2000, the fully outfitted Gulfstream V departed Teterboro Airport carrying eight passengers and three crew. The aircraft cruised up to a speed of Mach .88 before landing with NBAA IFR reserves at Van Nuys Airport in Los Angeles, California, completing the 2,219 nautical mile flight in four hours, 34 minutes - breaking the previous record by almost 15 minutes.
"The Gulfstream V has already proved that it is the business aircraft with the most range. This record flight highlights that the Gulfstream V is also the fastest long-range business jet," said Joe Walker, senior vice president of worldwide sales for Gulfstream. "A major advantage of the Gulfstream V is its balanced speed and range performance. Whether the mission is a high speed transcontinental flight or an ultra-long range intercontinental flight, the Gulfstream V has the extra performance margins to out-class the competition."
On Friday, July 21, a Gulfstream V also completed the first nonstop record flight between Dallas and Farnborough. The Gulfstream V departed Love Field in Dallas, fully outfitted and carrying eight passengers and three crew. The aircraft cruised up to a speed of Mach .87 before landing with NBAA IFR reserves at Farnborough Aerodrome, completing the 4,167 nautical mile flight in seven hours and 48 minutes.
"Gulfstream V customers from the mid-western part of the U.S., such as Dallas, routinely make high speed flights to Europe," said Walker. "The Gulfstream V enjoys performance advantages over our competitors making it the number one choice in the ultra-long range market."
The first Gulfstream V entered customer service June 30, 1997. Today, the Gulfstream V is dominating the competition in the ultra-long-range business jet with 88 aircraft in customer service.
The Gulfstream V has met or exceeded its original design goals, including flying 6,500 nautical miles at speeds up to Mach .885 and a maximum cruise altitude up to 51,000 feet in regular customer operations. The aircraft's performance advantage takes it high above commercial air traffic, weather and adverse winds, permitting more direct routing and shorter flight durations. The Gulfstream V is the only business jet in its class that features cabin pressurization that never exceeds 6,000 feet, regardless of the aircraft's altitude, and 100 percent fresh air cabin at all times. The Gulfstream V has set 65 world and national records for speed, altitude, distance and time-to-climb since entering into service, and has four pending.
There are approximately 50 Gulfstream aircraft in service in the European region and the company has authorized service centers and warranty repair facilities in Cambridge, England; Geneva, Switzerland; and Basel, Switzerland. The Gulfstream V will be on display during the seven-day show, along with the Gulfstream IV-SP, the world's best-selling large-cabin business jet.
