GULFSTREAM V EARNS CITY PAIR RECORDS FOR NONSTOP BRISBANE-LOS ANGELES AND HOUSTON-CAIRO FLIGHTS
Four Other GV and GIV-SP City Pair Applications Pending
Savannah, Georgia - Sept. 17, 2001 - Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE:GD), has earned world-speed records from the FAI (Federation Aeronautique Internationale) for nonstop flights by its ultra-long range Gulfstream V business jet aircraft for two city pairs: Brisbane, Australia, to Los Angeles (6,227 nautical miles) and Houston to Cairo (6,099 nm). Both record flights took place earlier this year.
The GV's Brisbane to Los Angeles flight took place February 17 as the ultra-long range aircraft was returning to the United States following its debut at the Airshow Downunder in Melbourne, Australia. The Gulfstream V captured the city pairs record by flying 6,227 nautical miles in 12 hours and 42 minutes.
The nonstop Houston to Cairo flight took place on March 18 when the GV covered a distance of 6,099 nm in 12 hours and 11 minutes.
"As these world records attest, the Gulfstream V is an ultra-long range aircraft with the ability to connect business centers around the world," said Bill Boisture, Gulfstream president and chief operating officer. "The latest city pair records underscore the range, speed and capabilities of the Gulfstream V aircraft, and represent yet another reason why it has become the aircraft of choice for business people who travel internationally."
Earlier this year, Gulfstream was recognized by the NAA for establishing a city pairs record for a nonstop flight on a GV from Hilton Head to Milan on January 31. The flight covered a distance of 4,062 nm in 8 hours and 25 minutes. That flight is significant because it originated from Hilton Head's 4.300-foot runway, demonstrating the Gulfstream V's ability to depart from a short runway.
Meanwhile, applications for four other city pairs are still pending before the FAI. In the most recent, a long-range Gulfstream IV-SP business jet aircraft flew from Bedford, MA, to Moscow, covering 3,895 nm in 8 hours and 23 minutes. That flight occurred on Aug. 12 as the GIV-SP was en route to Moscow to take part in the Moscow Air Show.
On June 28, a GV flew from Johannesburg to Dublin, covering a distance of 5,086 nm in 11 hours and 29 minutes. On July 2, a GV flew from Dublin to San Antonio, a distance of 4,077 nm, in 7 hours and 49 minutes. And, on July 28, a GV flew from Las Vegas to Venice, covering a distance of 5,144 nm in 10 hours and 19 minutes.
All GV world speed records are listed under two categories: C1.L (airplanes in the 77,162 pound to 99,208 pound weight class) and the unlimited weight class. The GIV-SP's city pairs records are listed in two categories: C1.K (airplanes in the 55,116 pound to 77,162 pound weight class) and the unlimited weight class.
