GULFSTREAM RECEIVES FAA CERTIFICATE FOR INSTALLATION OF NORTHSTAR FLIGHT DECK SYSTEM ON GULFSTREAM IV/IV-SP AIRCRAFT
Cockpit Approach and Navigation Device Will Increase Safety, Pilot Effectiveness
Savannah, GA, March 19, 2002 - Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), has received a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) to install the Northstar Technologies CT-1000G Flight Deck Organizer System on its Gulfstream IV /IV-SP business jet aircraft.
Gulfstream also announced it is working on securing FAA certification of the same system for installation on its GV and GIII / GII business jet aircraft.
The Northstar Technologies CT-1000G Flight Deck Organizer System combines a complete Jeppesen approach plate database with a bright airport diagram moving map display that should assist in decreasing runway incursion accidents. A valuable approach and navigation aid, the system replaces bulky approach plate binders, which can weigh up to 120 pounds, with one CD-ROM and a laptop-like computer which fits on the control yoke and displays approach plate information. The CT-1000G can also be removed from the aircraft and when plugged into a docking station allows for comprehensive pre-flight planning. The system uses the Jeppesen JeppView FliteDeck, CD-ROM-based electronic chart service that eliminates most Jeppesen approach chart paper revisions.
"Gulfstream is the first business aircraft manufacturer to have successfully integrated and certified the Northstar system into the flight deck," said Tom Horne, senior experimental test pilot and program manager for the development of the Northstar program at Gulfstream. "We are confident it will prove to be a significant factor in increasing aircraft safety and pilot effectiveness."
The complete package, including two CT-1000Gs and all associated hardware, will cost approximately $50,000 for a typical installation. In addition, pilots must continue to subscribe to Jeppesen.
