SAVANNAH, Ga., Sept. 24, 2003 -- The Gulfstream Airborne Product Support dedicated mid-cabin, high-speed Gulfstream G100 business aircraft has completed its 200th flight, some 16 months after the program was launched.
Gulfstream Aerospace, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), introduced Airborne Product Support in May, 2002. Gulfstream Airborne Product Support assists warrantied customers by flying parts or technicians to aircraft that are unexpectedly grounded in the United States, the Caribbean, Mexico, and Canada, in places where commercial methods of transportation are not readily available. The G100 also is used to transport parts and technicians to major hubs to connect with international commercial flights to assist overseas customers.
"While all models of the Gulfstream aircraft fleet boast enviable dispatch reliability rates -- for example, the 500-aircraft Gulfstream GIV fleet averages an industry leading 99.68 per cent -- we recognize that any aircraft that is grounded is an inconvenience for our customer," said Larry Flynn, president, product support, Gulfstream. "Created to minimize the time our customers spend on the ground waiting for parts or technicians as well as the consequential frustration, Gulfstream Airborne Product Support remains the only service of this type offered by a business aircraft manufacturer. There is no question it has contributed significantly to Gulfstream being selected Number One in product support surveys recently conducted by two aviation trade publications."
In providing quality service on demand, Gulfstream's Airborne Product Support is managed for flexibility, responsiveness and quick turnaround, according to Flynn. The service manager on duty in Savannah has the authority to dispatch the G100 without turning to senior management for approval.
"Recently, the G100 was scheduled to fly from Gulfstream's headquarters in Savannah, Ga., to St. Paul, Minn. Prior to the plane's departure, an operator in Kansas City, Mo., called urgently requesting parts and technicians to assist him," said Flynn. "Because it would have taken longer to send the Gulfstream technicians to Kansas City via commercial airlines and Kansas City is relatively close to St. Paul, we deployed the G100 loaded with parts and technicians to assist both operators.
"After dropping off the necessary parts and technicians in Kansas City and while en route to St. Paul, the G100 flight crew received another request for parts from an operator in Baltimore, Md. Once the G100 crew dropped off required parts in St. Paul, they secured the required parts, loaded them on the plane and flew directly to Baltimore. Three customers satisfied within the time it would normally have taken to assist just one of them is what Airborne Product Support is all about," Flynn added.
In another incident, a Gulfstream aircraft flying to the Caribbean suffered a bird strike on landing, damaging a windshield. The Airborne Product Support G100 was dispatched with a new windshield and a technician, who returned the customer aircraft to service within less than 8 hours. Using commercial transportation, the same repair could have taken as long as 48 hours.
