GULFSTREAM TO BEGIN CUSTOMER EVALUATION OF IN-FLIGHT HIGH-SPEED, BROADBAND MULTI-LINK SERVICE
Value-added ARINC SKYLink Service Would Offer Business Jet Passengers the Fastest and Most Immediate Access to Web-Based Information
SAVANNAH, Ga., Oct. 6, 2003 – Gulfstream Aerospace, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), is currently actively involved in a program to evaluate a new in-cabin high-speed, broadband multi-link service. Gulfstream will select three to five customers with aircraft currently in-service to participate in this evaluation program. The broadband multi-link service promises to offer business jet passengers the newest and fastest Internet connection available on any aircraft today.
Gulfstream customers selected to participate in this program will be the beneficiaries of introductory pricing for equipment and subsequent service.
Gulfstream and ARINC, the world leader in transportation communications and systems engineering, are working together to launch ARINC SKYLink, the company’s newest satellite data link service, offering performance similar to the high-speed Internet connections and corporate networks found in modern offices.
"Based on what we’ve seen so far, this new satellite data link would be the solution for those customers who demand instant information, even when they’re at 50,000 feet," said Pres Henne, senior vice president, engineering, programs and test, Gulfstream. "With the increased speed in which information can be obtained through the SKYLink system coupled with the unsurpassed comfort and utility of the Gulfstream cabin, executives have a perfect work environment to conduct even the most time-sensitive business."
Gulfstream recently embarked on a development and evaluation program to ensure the SKYLink system provides operators of GV, GIV, GIV-SP, G300, G400, G500 and G550 business jets the broadband data performance as well as the same reliability they expect of their Gulfstream aircraft.
Flight-testing of prototype hardware conducted over the past year confirms the system’s performance. The service evaluation phase, which will begin next month when Gulfstream installs the four-component system on two customers’ aircraft, will verify the system’s reliability and compatibility with the Gulfstream business jet. Gulfstream will begin offering the high-speed, broadband data link as a retrofit and as a new-aircraft option in the first quarter of 2004.
Through the ARINC SKYLink broadband service, passenger/users would be able to access the Internet up to ten times faster than the most widely used in-flight service available today and at a fraction of typical service fees. Additionally, unlike other in-flight network services that feature dial-up connections, this satellite data link would be always available within the coverage region.
The broadband, multi-link system is comprised of a dish antenna that is mounted under the tail radome of the aircraft, an antenna control unit, a transceiver router and an advanced cabin server. As a launch customer for the SKYLink service, Gulfstream will provide system installations for competing business jets, including Dassault and Bombardier aircraft.
The Gulfstream broadband, multi-link system is part of Gulfstream’s commitment to provide its customer with an unparalleled experience in the cabin, thereby ensuring the Gulfstream customer cabin is the safest, most comfortable and most productive cabin environment available. The first cabin enhancement is the advanced cabin management system, a self-healing digital backbone for cabin communications and controls based on IEEE 1394 FireWire technology and developed jointly by Gulfstream and Rockwell Collins. The broadband, multi-link service is the second enhancement in the cabin development program to be announced.
