GULFSTREAM'S PLANEVIEW FLIGHT DECK RECEIVES FOLLOW-ON
CERTIFICATION FROM THE FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION
Appended Certification Unleashes New Functionality
in the Cockpit
SAVANNAH, Ga., July 8, 2004 Gulfstream Aerospace, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), has received follow-on certification from the Federal Aviation Administration for its PlaneView flight deck. This new certification brings an array of new functionality to the integrated cockpit, including electronic charts and video displayed directly on the primary flight displays.
"With this follow-on certification, we continue to develop PlaneView's potential as a fully integrated information management system," said Pres Henne, senior vice president, programs, engineering and test, Gulfstream. "Its ability to simultaneously present different types of information - including digital, graphical, and video - in a simple manner has significantly raised the standard by which new flight decks are being designed.
"For the first time, pilots can view real-time video images received from a tail camera or the Gulfstream Enhanced Vision System, directly on the primary flight display," Henne continued. "Likewise, electronic charts, which previously could only be viewed through a separate monitor installed in the cockpit, can now be viewed directly on the primary displays. The PlaneView flight deck is quite simply more efficient."
First certified in August 2003, PlaneView now has the ability to display electronic charts based on Jeppesen© data, which include instrument approaches, airport diagrams, SIDs (Standard Instrument Departures), STARs (Standard Terminal Arrival Routes) and NOTAMs (Notice to Airmen). To improve the usefulness of the chart information, a moving aircraft position indicator has been added that, when combined with the charts, provide pilots with a keener sense of situational awareness. Gulfstream also has linked the charts with flight plan information - including departure, arrival and alternate airport data - from the Flight Management System (FMS), thus allowing pilots to more easily access the appropriate charts. In addition, a "find" function has been incorporated to help pilots quickly locate a particular chart of interest.
Gulfstream has also improved the communications systems by activating the NAV/COM (Navigation/Communication) radio. Used primarily for digital datalink communications with ground-based operations, the NAV/COM radio also serves as a back-up for either of the pilot's or copilot's NAV and COM radios. The digital datalink provides critical flight data to air traffic control, enables two-way communication with service providers through text messaging and provides necessary AFN (Air Traffic Facilities Notification).
Also as part of the recent certification, Gulfstream has fully integrated VNAV (Vertical Navigation) within the FMS. Additionally, temperature data derived from the BTMS (Brake Temperature Monitoring System) is now used by the FMS for takeoff performance calculations, thereby providing the cockpit crew with improved data, courtesy of PlaneView.
"As a result of PlaneView's highly flexible foundation, we are able to refine, enhance and add new capabilities to an already seamlessly integrated flight deck," Henne said. "As new technologies and systems arise, we will continue to develop ways to further integrate and enhance the PlaneView flight deck."
Gulfstream is currently in the process of upgrading the PlaneView flight decks on in-service G550 and G500 aircraft. Three Gulfstream service centers - Savannah, Ga.; Long Beach, Calif., and London Luton in the United Kingdom - will perform the upgrade work.
An integrated avionics suite, PlaneView features four large 14-inch liquid crystal displays in landscape format - the first type of cockpit to incorporate this type of display. Each display screen can support up to three windows, each providing pilots different types of flight information. The unique implementation of Honeywell's Primus Epic® architecture and display system provides substantially more display area than previous six-display designs while reducing the overall weight and volume of the equipment. The pilot's scan of the expansive display area finds flight and navigation data in logical and familiar locations, resulting in reduced workload and increased situational awareness.
In addition to the ultra-long-range G550 and G500 aircraft, Gulfstream's two aircraft-in-development - the large-cabin, long-range G450 and the large-cabin, mid-range G350 - feature the PlaneView cockpit. Of significant note to fleet operators is that the G350, G450, G500, G550 and GV share the same type rating, resulting in significant economies in operation.
