SAVANNAH, Ga., May 9, 2005 - Three years ago, Gulfstream Aerospace, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), introduced the business aviation industry’s first airborne aircraft maintenance and repair support program called Airborne Product Support. Since then, Gulfstream has been dispatching its dedicated mid-cabin, high-speed Gulfstream G100 aircraft to bring spare parts and technicians to aircraft under warranty at airports within North America, Central America and the Caribbean.
“We created Airborne Product Support to minimize the time customers spend on the ground waiting for urgently needed parts, repairs or technical assistance,” said Larry Flynn, president, product support, Gulfstream. “It was a revolutionary idea because no other manufacturer had offered this type of service.”
In cases where a customer’s grounded aircraft is overseas, the G100 transports parts and technicians to major commercial airline hubs to connect with international flights.
Designed and built for reliability, Gulfstream business jets experience a dispatch reliability rate at or greater than 99 percent, among the highest in the industry. Even so, the company maintains a steadfast commitment to providing extraordinary customer service and product support, which is reflected in the industry recognition and awards that Gulfsteam Product Support has received.
Painted in a distinct livery, the dedicated Airborne Product Support aircraft is capable of carrying windshields, tires, test equipment and technicians. The G100 can reach most airports in North America and the Carribbean without having to refuel. In addition to a dedicated airplane, Gulfstream has assigned two Airborne Product Support crews to fly these support missions as well as a full-time manager who oversees the operation.
Matt Lowery, director of aviation maintenance, Lockheed Martin, has used the airborne maintenance service to ensure the Gulfstream aircraft in his corporate fleet meet their flight schedules.
“With the high cost of parts nowadays and planes being under warranty for a long time, it doesn’t make sense for a corporate operator to keep a lot of spares on hand, and so a service like this is an asset to us,” Lowery said. “It’s far and away the best service that any OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) has come up with.”
To date, Gulfstream has completed 647 Airborne Product Support missions, 53 of which have been outside the continental United States. While the aircraft and crew are available anytime of the day, every day of the year, the plane actually flies on an average of five to six support flights each week.
