SAVANNAH , Ga. , May 19, 2006 – Gulfstream Aerospace, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), officially opened its new Research and Development Center in Savannah today with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Among the local dignitaries joining Bryan Moss, Gulfstream president, and Pres Henne, Gulfstream senior vice president, programs, engineering and test, on stage were dignitaries including Georgia State Senator Regina Thomas, 2 nd District; Pete Liakakis, chairman of the Chatham County Commission; Edna Jackson, Savannah City Council member and Mayor Pro Tem; Brian Foster, vice chairman of the Savannah Economic Development Authority board of directors, chairman of the Savannah Chamber of Commerce board of directors and president of First Chatham Bank.
On March 6, Gulfstream announced a 7-year, $300 million long-range expansion plan for its Savannah headquarters and business-jet manufacturing and maintenance facilities that is expected to generate 1,100 additional jobs. To meet an immediate need for office space, Gulfstream is leasing the Research and Development Center at 135 Crossroads Parkway in Savannah.
During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Gulfstream President Bryan Moss reflected on the significance of the March 6 announcement and today’s official opening of the Gulfstream Research and Development Center , which forms an integral part of Gulfstream’s Savannah-based headquarters.
Moss said, "What I think March 6 th and today represent more than anything else are the following two facts. First, Gulfstream intends to remain a major force in the local and state economies and second, Gulfstream intends to retain and protect its leadership position in the business aviation industry.
"What is particularly exciting about today is that we are not just talking about proposed plans and activities. Rather, we can see first hand the results of the efforts of many people to make this new R&D Center a reality." Moss said. "From this building, and more particularly from the skilled, gifted, dedicated and talented people who work in it, will come the new ideas that will ensure Gulfstream’s future."
Gulfstream departments assigned to the R&D center include Flight Sciences; Preliminary Design; New Program Development; and G100, G150 and G200 Program Offices. When the building was completed in March, Gulfstream personnel from Engineering, Manufacturing, Planning, Product Support and Material, many of whom were housed in temporary trailers, began moving into the office space.
In October 2005, Gulfstream entered into a 5-year agreement with the building owner and developer, North Point Real Estate, to lease the 100,300 square-foot building located on 9 acres of land, less than 5 miles from Gulfstream’s company headquarters in Savannah. The agreement also provides Gulfstream the option to renew the lease for up to 10 additional years. Both the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDED) and the Savannah Economic Development Authority (SEDA) were instrumental in the selection of Savannah as the site for this facility.
Kern-Coleman & Co. of Savannah served as the engineer and architect of the building and Evans General Contractors of Alpharetta , Ga. , was the contractor. The building provides modern, technologically advanced office and working space for up to 750 employees and parking space for 700 vehicles. The building includes 14 meeting rooms, six of which are equipped for video conferencing; a Computer Aided Three-dimensional Interactive Application (CATIA) training center; and an acoustics laboratory. Fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, the building features entrance ramps, modified bathrooms and directional signs in Braille.
