GULFSTREAM'S LONG BEACH, CALIF., FACILITY MARKS 20TH YEAR OF INTERIOR COMPLETIONS AND SERVICE OF GULFSTREAM BUSINESS JETS
Long Beach Facility Was Acquired To Support Gulfstream Operators' Aircraft
SAVANNAH , Ga. June 26, 2006 – This year, Gulfstream Aerospace is recognizing the 20th anniversary of its Long Beach, Calif., business-jet interior completions and service facility. In March 1986, Gulfstream purchased the facility to absorb a portion of Gulfstream's existing aircraft interior completions work being done at its manufacturing headquarters in Savannah, Ga. The acquisition also enabled Gulfstream to expand its aircraft service and maintenance capabilities three years later.
"The acquisition of the Long Beach facility enabled us to meet the strong demand for the Gulfstream IV/IV-SP (GIV/GIV-SP), which today is still the best-selling, large-cabin, long-range business jet ever produced," said Bryan Moss, president, Gulfstream. "It also provided Gulfstream operators on the west coast, as well as Asia, Central America and South America, with ready access to another service center."
In 2005, Gulfstream's Long Beach Service Center received approval from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) to provide maintenance support for Chinese-registered GIV-SP, Gulfstream III (GIII) and Gulfstream II (GII) aircraft. In March, Gulfstream's Long Beach facility received notice from an independent auditor accredited by the U.S.-based Registrar Accreditation Board that it was ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 compliant. ISO 14001 certification is earned by companies that are in compliance with international regulatory standards and OHSAS 18001 is an Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems specification designed to make the workplace safer.
In 1986, approximately 100 employees worked at the Long Beach site, 21 of whom continue to work there. In all, more than 600 people are employed at the facility today.
The Gulfstream Long Beach site has gone through numerous renovations during the past 20 years, more than tripling its under-roof space. All of the original buildings, with the exception of a 59,512-square-foot aircraft hangar, were demolished, making way for new structures.
Within three years of the acquisition, Gulfstream added an 88,612-square-foot office and shop building, a 75,463-square-foot hangar, a 3,150-square-foot equipment maintenance building and a 28,165-square-foot building that houses a maintenance hangar, shops and a cafeteria. In 1998, the site added a 59,060-square-foot paint hangar and in 2001, it added a 5,700-square-foot Finish Shop. Most recently Gulfstream added 5,520 square feet of space for material stores and operations.
Today, Gulfstream's Long Beach site comprises 325,182 square feet of under-roof space on 12.665 acres directly adjacent to the Long Beach Airport. A final phase manufacturing facility, Gulfstream Long Beach paints aircraft exteriors and installs interior furnishings in G550 and G500 business jets. Additionally, the Gulfstream Long Beach Service Center provides maintenance for GII, GIII, GIV/GIV-SP, GV, G300, G400, G200, G350, G450, G500 and G550 business jets.
