Company Expands Worldwide Footprint, Prepares Two New Aircraft For Service

GENEVA, May 13, 2012 — Speaking today at the European Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition in Geneva, Gulfstream President Larry Flynn said the company has enjoyed a strong beginning to the year as it delivers more aircraft, expands facilities worldwide and prepares for the entry-into-service of two new aircraft.

“We are aggressively adding people, parts and buildings all over the world to make sure we fulfill our commitment to customers to provide the best service in the industry,” Flynn said. “We added more than 1,300 employees in 2011 and have already added 700 this year.”
He noted that the company is in the midst of a $500 million expansion that will add production, product support and engineering capacity at its Savannah campus. The building effort follows on the heels of a $400 million expansion concluded in 2010.

Flynn also noted that a new service facility in Luton, England, doubled capacity in the important London area. The Luton facility services more than 1,000 Gulfstream aircraft a year from all corners of the world. Gulfstream also announced late last year a joint venture in China to build the first factory service center by a business-jet manufacturer.

That facility, Gulfstream Beijing, is a joint venture with Chinese charter and management firm Deerjet and the Grand China Aviation Technik maintenance organization. It will be headed by veteran Gulfstream product support executive, Mr. Kay Ardalan, who is already on-site in Beijing. Gulfstream expects the facility to open this year.

Gulfstream also announced late last year a planned doubling in size of its Northeast U.S. factory service center in Westfield, Mass. A new building will be built there to support G650s stationed in or passing through the area.

Commenting on regional markets, Flynn said, “Economies are waxing and waning globally, and we are keeping a close eye on markets around the world, whereas a decade ago we were mainly focused on North America. The key trend of recent months has been the return of the U.S. Fortune 500 to the market.
“Leading publicly traded companies are buying new airplanes as business confidence rises in the U.S. These are the sorts of long-time business aircraft users that are disciplined at refreshing their fleets at regular intervals. This bodes well for the industry as a whole and we hope to see the trend continue and strengthen.”
In the first quarter of 2012, Gulfstream’s sales were 60 percent North American and 40 percent international, basically a reversal of the previous year’s pattern.

“We see pockets of opportunity in the European market, more so in Northern Europe. Russia remains a key market. Turkey is a robust economy with a growing need for business aviation.”
Flynn also commented on new aircraft programs. “We are close now to the goal line for the G650 and G280. We expect both to earn full Federal Aviation Administration certification around mid-year, with entry-into-service to follow shortly thereafter. These aircraft will be in customer hands and visiting airports around the world this year.

“We could not be more pleased at the performance we are seeing from these two aircraft. Customers are simply going to be delighted. Nothing in business aviation offers the performance and capability of the G650, with the ability to dash across oceans at Mach 0.90. The G280 flies farther than we promised, with a range of 3,600 nautical miles (6,667 km), which is very useful for connecting key international city pairs. It uses less runway. It’s the leader in its category in every performance metric.

“So we are excited about the future at Gulfstream. We’re very upbeat. The greatest challenge we face is economic risk as regional economies fluctuate. We are addressing this by focusing on all markets around the world, and by consistent investment in new technology and in our expanding footprint regardless of macroeconomic factors. We’re grateful to have a strong parent company, General Dynamics, that allows us to plan and invest for the long-term.”

Customers Worldwide Benefit From Rapid-Response Unit

SAVANNAH, Ga., May 13, 2012 — Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. recently completed the 3,000th operator-assistance flight by its Field and Airborne Support Teams known as Gulfstream FAST. The mission milestone was achieved 10 years after Gulfstream launched the first-of-its-kind airborne maintenance and support service in May 2002.

Gulfstream FAST members can be dispatched by airplane, train, automobile or van to resolve maintenance issues for Gulfstream aircraft worldwide 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The team uses two dedicated aircraft to deliver flight-essential parts and/or technicians to operators whose aircraft are under warranty in North America, Central America and the Caribbean.

“Our aircraft have industry-leading dispatch reliability rates, but there are times when a failure occurs,” said Mark Burns, president, Gulfstream Product Support. “Gulfstream FAST minimizes the time a customer spends waiting for parts, repairs or technicians. It reduces return-to-service times for their aircraft, which means they can get back to using it as a productive business tool. FAST defines our commitment to the best possible customer service.”

Gulfstream has two G100s, eight pilots and 15 technicians dedicated to the FAST program. FAST also includes maintenance engineers in Europe — two in Geneva, Switzerland; one in Altenrhein, Switzerland; and one in Athens, Greece — and more than 20 mobile support vehicles throughout the U.S. and Europe.

In the case of airborne mission No. 3,000, FAST pilots Marilyn Whicker and Ademar Calligaro departed Savannah on March 24 to deliver an auxiliary power fuel control unit to a G550 at its home base, Southwest Regional Airport in Benton Harbor, Mich.

The airborne support element of FAST, formerly known as Airborne Product Support (APS), was created in 2002 after a study of transient operator destinations, home base locations and material requirements. A short-term pilot program confirmed the value and cost effectiveness of support delivered by aircraft. Research concluded that a Savannah-based G100, with its 2,950-nautical-mile-range and speed of Mach 0.84, would be the ideal aircraft to reach most airports in North America and the Caribbean without refueling. In situations where an operator’s jet is outside the G100’s range of service, Gulfstream will fly parts or technicians to a major airline hub, where they can connect to commercial flights to reach the customer’s aircraft.

“The primary objective of Gulfstream FAST is to ensure maximum availability of a customer’s aircraft,” Burns said. “Airborne support is one of the ways in which we do that.”

Behind-the-scenes logistical support for FAST includes personnel from several Gulfstream departments, such as Technical Operations, Flight Operations, Spare Part Sales and Field Service. FAST aircraft are easily identified by their livery, which includes the logos of many Gulfstream suppliers.

FAST has completed several noteworthy missions in its 10-year history of airborne support, including:

March 2012: Completed longest mission to date, 3,266 nautical miles, to support customer in Anchorage, Alaska

December 2010: Supported a Philadelphia-based customer with three flights within a week during holiday season to replace a rudder actuator

August 2010: Due to a family emergency, flew Gulfstream customer attending training in Savannah to Morelia, Mexico

April 2010: Supplier’s service bulletin prompted five flights (Toronto, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Charlotte, Savannah) over 13 hours by one FAST aircraft and one flight crew to support eight G200s

Of Gulfstream’s 3,000-plus FAST flights, more than 250 have been outside the continental United States. They include missions to Panama City, Bermuda, Barbados and Iqaluit, Canada.

Large-Cabin, Ultra-Long Range Aircraft Surpasses 450,000 Landings

SAVANNAH, Ga., May 13, 2012 — Nearly 15 years after its entry-into-service, Gulfstream Aerospace Corp.’s first ultra-long range business jet – the Gulfstream GV – has surpassed one million flight hours.
“This milestone reflects the safety, performance and reliability of these aircraft,” said Pres Henne, senior vice president, Programs, Engineering and Test, Gulfstream.

The GV remains an extremely reliable aircraft, currently operating at an NBAA dispatch reliability rate of 99.82. Over the past 15 years, the GV in-service fleet has completed more than 458,000 takeoffs and landings. The GV fleet leader has flown more than 16,100 flight hours and completed more than 7,400 landings.
The GV rolled out in September 1995 and was manufactured simultaneously alongside the GIV-SP. Within a few months of the GV's first delivery in June 1997, its development team was awarded the 1997 Robert J. Collier Trophy, the highest honor in aeronautics and astronautics in North America.

The GV was the launch aircraft for the BR710 engine by what was then BMW/Rolls-Royce, now wholly owned by Rolls-Royce. The engine was the first member of the very successful BR700 engine family. New technologies made it very light and fuel efficient with an excellent take-off and climb performance.
“Rolls-Royce congratulates Gulfstream on this milestone for the GV, the first aircraft to be powered by our BR710 engine,” said Scott Shannon, executive vice president, Customer Business, Civil Small and Medium Engines, Rolls-Royce. “The GV has delivered outstanding performance and reliability and we are proud to have played our part in its success.”

A total of 193 GVs were manufactured. The aircraft has been certified in 55 countries, including 31 European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) countries. The holder of more than 60 world aviation records, the GV can fly 6,500 nautical miles non-stop, cruise at speeds up to Mach 0.885 and reach altitudes of 51,000 feet, well above commercial traffic.

The robust construction, versatility and reliability of the Gulfstream V make it highly desirable for use as a special mission aircraft. For example, GVs are used for weather research, electronic intelligence, medical evacuation and maritime patrol. The GV also serves the U.S. Air Force and presidential fleet under the C-37A designation.

Ultra-Long-Range, Ultra-Large-Cabin Aircraft Crosses Atlantic, Sets Unconfirmed Speed Record

GENEVA, May 12, 2012 — Gulfstream Aerospace Corp.’s ultra-large-cabin, ultra-long-range Gulfstream G650 made its first trans-Atlantic crossing on May 12 en route to the 12th European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (EBACE) in Geneva. The aircraft flew 3,780 nautical miles (7,000 km) squawk-free and nonstop in just 6 hours and 55 minutes.

“Customers are going to appreciate the tremendous capabilities and flexibility of this aircraft,” said Scott Buethe, senior experimental test pilot, Gulfstream. “Flying to Geneva in that amount of time surely qualifies as a city-pair record, so we have submitted the flight to the National Aeronautic Association to officially claim it. This is the second record we’ve set with the G650, the world’s fastest civil aircraft. The first was a 1,900-nm (3,545 km) sprint from Los Angeles to Savannah that we accomplished in just 3 hours and 26 minutes. On both flights, the airplane flew beautifully.”

Buethe flew the aircraft from Washington, D.C., to Geneva, Switzerland, with Ahmed Ragheb and Rick Gowthrop, senior production test pilots, Gulfstream. Additional participants in the flight included David Chalk, flight test engineer.

“The aircraft’s first trans-Atlantic crossing represents a milestone in flight test and certification,” said Pres Henne, senior vice president, Programs, Engineering and Test, Gulfstream. “And its squawk-free performance demonstrates that the aircraft is meeting the substantial objectives we – and our customers – set for it.”

Serial Number (S/N) 6020 departed Dulles International Airport at 6:56 a.m. local time on May 12, weighing 88,500 pounds, 11,100 pounds below the aircraft’s maximum takeoff weight, and climbed directly to 43,000 feet (13,106 m). The aircraft cruised at Mach 0.90 to Mach 0.92 throughout the flight, landing in Geneva 6 hours and 55 minutes after takeoff.

At 43,000 feet cruise altitude, the pressurization system maintained the cabin altitude at a comfortable 3,700 feet (1,128 m).

The G650’s Saturday arrival in Geneva follows that of the super mid-size G280, which traveled the same leg in 7 hours and 47 minutes at Mach 0.80.

The G650 will spend two days in Geneva as part of Gulfstream’s static display for EBACE. It will be joined by the super midsize G280; the large-cabin, ultra-long-range G550; the large-cabin, long-range G450; and the wide-cabin, high-speed G150.

“We’re thrilled to have this aircraft here with us in Europe,” said Scott Neal, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing, Gulfstream. “It’s an opportunity for operators and customers to see this all-new aircraft up close and side-by-side with the other aircraft in the Gulfstream fleet.”

The G650, which is undergoing flight test and certification for entry-into-service later this year, will leave Geneva after the static display closes on Monday, May 14, to return to Savannah in support of flight test.

The G650 received a provisional type certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Nov. 18, 2011, and is in the process of completing final certification tests with the FAA to support entry-into-service later this year.

Aircraft Sets Two Unconfirmed City-Pair Speed Records En Route To Geneva

GENEVA, May 12, 2012 — Gulfstream Aerospace Corp.'s super mid-sized Gulfstream G280 arrived in Geneva today to participate in the European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (EBACE 2012). The aircraft will be part of Gulfstream's static display.

The G280, which is undergoing flight test and certification in preparation for entry-into-service later this year, set two unconfirmed city-pair records en route to Switzerland: one from Dallas to Washington, D.C., and another from Washington, D.C., to Geneva.

The super midsized aircraft left Dallas Love Field at 7:44 p.m. local time May 10, weighing 35,500 pounds, 4,600 pounds below its maximum takeoff weight of 39,600 pounds. It climbed directly to 43,000 feet (13,106 m) and cruised at a speed of Mach 0.75, then Mach 0.80 to accomplish acoustic tests, meeting sound-level objectives. It then accelerated to a cruise speed of Mach 0.84 for the remainder of the flight, landing with NBAA IFR reserves at Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C., 2 hours and 20 minutes after takeoff.

The aircraft departed Dulles at 8:12 p.m. local time May 11 with full fuel, immediately climbing to 43,000 feet (13,106 m). The aircraft covered 3,682 nm ground distance, arriving in Geneva at 9:58 a.m. local time May 12 for a total flight time of 7 hours and 47 minutes. The aircraft cruised at its long-range speed of Mach 0.80.

The aircraft accomplished both flights squawk-free.

The aircraft was piloted from Dallas to D.C. by Chip Leonard, senior international captain, Gulfstream, and from Dulles to Geneva by Brett Rundle, chief demonstration pilot, Mid-Cabin Aircraft, Gulfstream. Butch Allen, senior production test pilot, Mid-Cabin Aircraft, Gulfstream, was also on board along with Jeanette Brewer, manager, Flight Crew Cabin Operations, Gulfstream. There were five passengers on board the Dallas to D.C. flight and three from D.C. to Geneva.

This is the third air show for the aircraft (Serial Number 2004), which also made an appearance at the National Business Aviation Association Convention & Exhibition (NBAA) in 2010 and 2011. The aircraft will be in Geneva until May 16, when it returns to the Gulfstream mid-cabin completions center in Dallas. Once certified, S/N 2004 will be used to support marketing and demonstration flights.

Gulfstream confirmed in October 2011 that the G280 exceeded the major performance capabilities announced at the program's public launch in 2008. Following extensive flight testing, Gulfstream demonstrated that the G280 flies 3,600 nm (6,667 km) with four passengers at Mach 0.80 with NBAA IFR reserves.

In addition to more range, the aircraft offers a shorter balanced field length. Its balanced field length has been reduced from 4,960 feet (1,512 m) to 4,750 feet (1,448 m). This field length is an improvement of more than 1,300 feet compared to the G200 it replaces.

The two city-pair speed records are pending approval by the National Aeronautics Association.

SAVANNAH, Ga., March 27, 2012 — Speaking to media at Shanghai’s first Asian Business Aviation Conference and Exhibition (ABACE), Gulfstream President Larry Flynn addressed the strength of sales in the Asia Pacific and committed to increasing Gulfstream resources in the region.

“Asia, and particularly China, remains our leading export market,” he said. “Twenty-seven percent of our current backlog is in Asia Pacific. The fleet of Gulfstream aircraft in use in Hong Kong and China has grown from zero in 2000 to more than 80 today, with more on the way.” He noted a firm order worth $810 million from Minsheng Leasing for 20 aircraft.

Flynn also introduced a trio of new customers: Nanshan Jet, which is taking delivery of its second G450 long-range jet, with an additional G450 and an ultra-long-range G550 on order; AllPoints Jet, which signed an order at the show for a G450 and G550; and Asia Jet, which is expanding its Shanghai charter fleet with a mid-range G200.

“These companies exemplify the dynamism in the Chinese market,” Flynn said. “All will use the aircraft to conduct charter operations, thereby introducing more Chinese companies to the advantages of business aviation and the comfort and capability of Gulfstream jets.

“Gulfstream’s philosophy is that top quality service sells business jets; we have and will continue to expand our service offerings in Asia Pacific by growing our product support infrastructure.”

Flynn pointed to the planned opening of Gulfstream Beijing, a joint service center operated by Gulfstream, Deer Jet and Grand China Aviation Technik. The joint venture will be known as Gulfstream Beijing and will open later this year. Already, Gulfstream has a parts warehouse operating nearby. Gulfstream will be the first business jet manufacturer to offer factory service in China.

Flynn also noted Gulfstream’s close collaboration with training provider FlightSafety International, which inaugurated the first full-flight simulator in Asia strictly devoted to business aviation. The G450/G550 simulator is based in Hong Kong, placing training much closer to customers from northern China and other parts of Asia.

“We are also proud to have a Beijing office in the central business district there, headed by Regional Vice President Herman Chai,” Flynn noted. The office, located in the middle of Beijing's Central Business District, will give customers centralized access to Gulfstream resources in the rapidly growing Chinese market.

Flynn said Gulfstream has a 48 percent share of the large-cabin market in the Asia-Pacific region.

“Gulfstream customers value our aircraft for their category-leading range, speed, reliability and comfort,” he said. “And they know that Gulfstream is there to support them from an aircraft’s entry-into-service through years of operation. We are proud to have established such a solid reputation in China in such a short time.”

GULFSTREAM ELITE INTERIOR RECEIVES FAA SUPPLEMENTAL TYPE CERTIFICATE

SAVANNAH, Ga., March 22, 2012 — Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. recently received a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for its Elite Interior package, which was inspired by the company's all-new ultra-large-cabin, ultra-long-range G650. The certificate clears the way for the optional interior upgrade, which includes a streamlined passenger service unit, high-definition entertainment system and the Gulfstream Cabin Management System (GCMS), to be installed on customer G550 and G450 aircraft.

"Gulfstream's leadership in electronic design means we can provide the best and latest technology to our customers," said Bob Geary, director, Research and Development, Final Phase, Gulfstream. "With the Elite Interior, passengers can have total control over their environment thanks to touch-screen-based wireless handhelds that are part of the Gulfstream Cabin Management System."

The Elite package features leather ledges, less veneer and more high-gloss, painted surfaces within the cabin. The sidewall tables in the club seating area can be electronically activated, and ambient LED lighting, provided throughout the interior, accents the edges of the curved credenza, the table box and the galley. Lighting is automatically activated in the drawers, cabinets and closets for easy accessibility.

The air return duct and the passenger service unit are now incorporated into one unit, and a racetrack accent – featuring French stitching – runs the length of the aircraft's lower sidewall, emphasizing the width. For maximum comfort, the seats come equipped with telescoping headrests, flexible wings, curving "waterfall" leg rests, electric lumbar controls with optional heat and massage, and one-touch full-flat berthing.

The galley and annex were reconfigured to remind passengers of their kitchens at home, with a stainless-steel-trimmed appliance stack with two coffee makers, a microwave and a convection oven. Gulfstream's industrial design team also incorporated hinged doors on the crystal-storage unit to double as an added work surface. Closet space that was previously accessible only through the lavatory has been re-engineered to be part of the galley.

"The Elite option also includes GCMS, "which started with the goal of adding automatic redundancy to cabin systems and was fleshed out with input from our customer advisory board made up of operators, maintenance professionals and flight attendants," said Geary.

Receiving the STC for the Elite option means that GCMS, a key element of the interior upgrade, can also be installed on the G650 and G280 aircraft, which are expected to enter service in the second quarter of this year.

"Various off-the-shelf personal handheld devices, such as an iPod, and in the future an iPad, or an Android device, can be used to control the system," Geary said. "Once the GCMS app has been downloaded and the device taken aboard a GCMS-equipped aircraft, the application adapts itself based on the configuration of the specific aircraft. This allows customers to have one software program and use the same handheld devices across an entire fleet of Gulfstream products with different interior systems and options."

The Gulfstream-owned design makes software changes easier, faster and less expensive for customers. The system has a dedicated support team comprising project managers, procurement specialists, engineers and quality professionals that act as a turnkey supplier to Gulfstream. While GCMS is standard on the G650 and G280, it is offered as an option for the G550 and G450.

“With the longest range at the fastest speed, an advanced avionics suite and the most comfortable cabin, the G150 is the best in its mid-sized cabin aircraft category,” said Stan Dixon, vice president, Mid-Cabin Programs, Gulfstream. “It has a dispatch reliability rate of 99.88 percent and an availability rate of 92.59 percent.”

“We’re very pleased to announce at this show that we will be basing a country parts manager, Aniruddh Srivastava, in India beginning this year to oversee parts storage and distribution in the country,” Sperry noted. “We believe we will be ahead of the industry by having a dedicated manager here focused on this aspect of service to customers.” Gulfstream maintains major parts bases in the region, including Dubai and Hong Kong.

Commenting on the state of business aviation in India, Sperry said, “We are here to promote Gulfstream, but equally to promote the concept that business aviation builds businesses, particularly in a globalized economy.” Gulfstream customers have 20 business jets based in India and 175 in the Asia Pacific region, up from just 27 a decade ago.

“We are focused on the future,” Sperry said, noting that two new products, the G280 and G650, were slated for certification and customer delivery in the second quarter of this year.

“The G280 leads the super-midsize segment in performance, and the G650, with a range of 12,000 km and a top speed of Mach 0.925, simply creates a category unto itself. They will create great opportunities for us in India and around the world,” Sperry said.

Elite Interior to Make Its Indian Debut

SAVANNAH, Ga. March 13, 2012 — Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. will showcase two of its aircraft – the wide-cabin, high-speed G150 and the large-cabin, long-range G450 – at India Aviation 2012 in Hyderabad, India, from March 14 to 18. For the first time in India, attendees will be able to view the G450’s Elite interior, the all-new optional interior inspired by Gulfstream’s ultra-large cabin, ultra-long-range G650.

The aircraft will be available for viewing at the Begumpet Airport on Sardar Patel Road in Hyderabad. In addition to the aircraft on static display, Gulfstream will have a chalet to host customers.

“Gulfstream has 175 aircraft in Asia Pacific, a number that has grown 350 percent in the last five years,” said Larry Flynn, president, Gulfstream. “Part of that growth is attributable to the efforts we extend during the India Aviation show, where we communicate our aircraft’s tremendous capabilities, their industry-leading dispatch reliability rates and the broad range of missions they can perform.”

The G450’s Elite interior – an option designed to appeal to international entrepreneurs – incorporates the new Gulfstream Cabin Management System (GCMS). Using an iPod touch®, passengers can control the lighting, temperature, speakers, monitors, entertainment equipment, window shades, CabinView™ Passenger Information System and attendant call from anywhere on the aircraft. The cabin management system has been designed to ensure no single-point failure will result in the complete loss of system functionality, including lighting, cabin control and entertainment systems.

The design also features leather ledges, less veneer and more high-gloss, painted surfaces within the cabin. For maximum comfort, the seats come fully loaded with telescoping headrests, flexible wings, waterfall leg rests, electric lumbar controls with optional heat and massage, and one-touch full-flat berthing. The galley and annex were reconfigured to remind passengers of their kitchens at home, with a stainless-steel-trimmed appliance stack with two coffee makers, a microwave and a convection oven.

The G150 recently surpassed 100,000 flight hours for the 95 aircraft in its fleet. With the longest range at the fastest speed, an advanced avionics suite and the most comfortable cabin, the G150 has a dispatch reliability rate of 99.88 percent and an availability rate of 92.59 percent.
